Building Rural Business Momentum in Southern Vermont

At BDCC, one of the ways we measure success is through the stories we get to share about businesses and community initiatives that are growing, adapting, and finding their stride. These stories include business owners making bold moves, expanding at a pace that fits their financial goals, and connecting with the resources they need to move forward.

In recent months, our outreach and programming have led to a noticeable increase in engagement. This shift may be a reflection of today’s economic landscape, where uncertainty, change, and opportunity exist side by side. It may also be the result of the steady, thoughtful work we have been doing to meet people where they are. Whatever the reason, we are seeing the results in real time.

For example, Scott’s Plumbing in Brookline accessed a sixty-thousand-dollar loan to purchase a new work vehicle. That investment helped keep a family business moving forward during a generational transition. These practical, community-based wins are what define our work.

We are seeing this same momentum through our partnerships. SCORE, for instance, received more than one hundred and twenty mentoring inquiries in February alone from across the Granite Region Chapter. This level of activity is a direct reflection of what we are building together.  We also see this reflected in a shared cohort with Southeastern Vermont Community Action, a non-profit committed to fighting poverty in the area, of over a dozen entrepreneurs exploring monthly business topics such as marketing budgeting, customer retention, how to approach a lender for funding and any other questions that the group may have.
