SoVermont Get on Board is a new program designed to invite, educate, encourage, and support people to become local government and community project volunteers.
Our first cohort included 30 active and aspiring local leaders from Pownal to Vernon, and Winhall to Dummerston, and everywhere in between. “Graduates” are exploring plans to run for town office, protect local wetlands, and implement strategic planning protocols with their nonprofit boards.
Read more about the speakers, topics, and conversations:
- Session 1: Developing Community Capital via Local Leadership (Townshend)
- Session 2: Learning and Thinking about Vermont’s Local Government (Manchester)
- Session 3: Working Together as a Community (Wilmington)
- Session 4: “We don’t have to do this work alone!” (Brattleboro)

From nonprofit board leaders to selectboard chairs, seven Southern Vermont leaders share how they got involved, their favorite achievements, and advice for others considering taking on a leadership role.
(Some of our favorite moments: Why Justice of the Peace is a great starter position, and why communities are stronger when elections are contested (that is, more than 1 person is running).)
