Local Solutions for Local Housing Needs: Save the Date for December 1st Workshop

Town officials and volunteers interested in increasing housing choice and availability in their communities are invited to save the date for a “Local Solutions for Local Housing Needs” workshop on Thursday, December 1. The event will take place in person at the Old School Community Center in Wilmington, VT from 9:30 am- 3 pm. Registration will open in the next two weeks at https://brattleborodevelopment.com/svep/

Designed to complement State-wide housing conferences, these sessions will have a local focus, allowing Southern Vermont communities to share their experiences and get ‘hands-on’ with finding solutions to local housing challenges.

The event is part of the Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation’s Southern Vermont Economy Project, which serves communities across Bennington and Windham Counties.

Participants should leave this workshop with a grasp of the ‘big picture’ of Southern Vermont’s housing needs, as well as ideas that they can implement immediately in their town.

The day will start with highlighting how and why to put a number to the need for local housing units. The group will move on to a peer panel of  representatives from towns around our region (including Brattleboro and Wilmington) showing how they have been building community support for housing in advance of implementing zoning changes.

Small group breakout sessions will then focus on providing some ‘do it now’ suggestions that can help build momentum around creating housing  in communities.

The day will end by looking at some current housing projects that ‘pencil out’ around our region.

Panelists include representatives from VHFA sharing their invaluable ‘housing ready toolbox,’and a host of community leaders and volunteers who have been working on housing solutions in their communities.

The workshop will include lunch, followed by a short walk around the village center in Wilmington to look at housing types common to many Vermont towns and discuss how those fit in with current zoning regulations (or not). Dress for the weather!
