Senior Survival Off to a Great Start!
Leland & Gray students completed their first day of Senior Survival last week with the help of BDCC’s Pipelines and Pathways Program (P3).
Students began by exploring the McClure Foundation’s “High-Pay, High-Demand Jobs” brochure, and identified possible career interests. Teachers will use this information when contacting local employers for job shadowing, speaker panel, and worksite tour opportunities.
This year’s Senior Survival course takes place during the 100-minute Project-Based Learning block. This doubles the amount of class time from previous years which now allows for extended course offerings.
In addition to the usual curriculum content like resumes, cover letters and interview skills, each class will feature a 21st century skills theme to further emphasize the importance of professionalism and basic employability skills all students need to take their first steps into the adult world. Pictured, students played The Birthday Game. Classmates, without speaking, were able to work as a team to place themselves in a line in the order of their birth month and year without talking. The game highlights nonverbal communication skills, leadership, teamwork, patience, creativity, following directions, and helping others – all skills that are valued and necessary at work, school, or in day to day life.
About Pipelines & Pathways
BDCC’s Pipelines and Pathways Program (P3) provides employment oriented career-planning for the region’s high school students. It brings training in 21st Century skills, work-based learning, and personal learning plan (PLP) engagement opportunities to all four public high schools in Windham County. The program assists in developing workforce-oriented curricula, expanding classroom relationships, and growing work-based learning through opportunities with local employers. It also supports teachers working face to face with students to implement personal learning plans and seize the myriad opportunities presented by Vermont’s Flexible Pathways Initiative under Act 77. Pipelines & Pathways is a BDCC Workforce Center of Excellence program based on SeVEDS strategies to increase the size and quality of the workforce.
