BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (WCAX) Several organizations have partnered to welcome and resettle up to 100 Afghans in southern Vermont.
The new arrivals will be temporarily housed at the Brattleboro campus of World Learning’s School for International Training and then moved into permanent housing. The program will provide them with basic necessities as well as English language support, and cultural orientation classes. Organizers say there are currently 22 people at the SIT site. They expect to welcome anywhere from 10 to 15 Afghans every week from now until February.
“We know some folks will stay and some will leave, but our goal as an initiative is to make sure everyone who wants to stay, who wants to make Vermont home long-term, has the resources and opportunities to do so,” said Alex Beck, the Welcoming Communities manager.
The Ethiopian Community Development Council is also among the groups assisting in the settlement process.
