L&G’s 7th Senior Survival Cohort Survives!

Students from this year’s graduating class at Leland & Gray just completed a rigorous semester of resume writing, informational and mock interviews, professionalism training, and more, as part of  Senior Survival, a credit-bearing, required course. This is the seventh cohort to complete the program since its inception in 2020, or really reboot of a program with the support of BDCC’s P3.

The class, peppered with Bruegger’s Bagel breakfasts and other incentives, culminated in a Tito’s Taco Bar celebration – a new tradition established for future Senior Survival Grads!

Twelve students will receive the Windham Work Ready Credential, an indication to college recruiters and employers that the student has completed the course to L&G and P3’s rigorous standards and is ready for their first steps into the professional world.

Students in the class had a wide range of career interests that included culinary and restaurant ownership, environmental science, mental healthcare, construction, early childhood education, physical therapy, emergency services, accounting, astronomy, and journalism. One student, (pictured) interviewed with Deerfield Valley News Editor, Randy Capitani, and snagged an offer for a paid internship!

Part of the course is ensuring students make a meaningful connection with real-life professionals as part of their career exploration, and developing important professional communication skills. Many thanks to Elizabeth Rosenberg from Windham Regional Career Center’s Culinary Department, Ashely Eaton from UVM’s Environmental Science Department, Geoffrey Martin and Jessica Tulley from The Brattleboro Retreat, Anthony Girard from GPI Construction, Jessica Alexson from Stratton Mountain Early Childhood, Damon Collie from The Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium, Dani West from Rescue, Inc., Kris Plante from BDCC’s Finance Department, and Crystal Mansfield from Grace Cottage’s Physical Therapy Department.

About Pipelines & Pathways

BDCC’s Pipelines and Pathways Program (P3) provides career education within the five southeastern Vermont public high schools. P3 helps students develop their personalized learning plans (PLP) through learning experiences to develop knowledge about career opportunities, and achieve their goals after graduation. Students develop soft skills, financial literacy, knowledge about economic sectors and skills in-demand through hands-on activities, work-based learning, and mentorships. Pipelines & Pathways is a BDCC Workforce Center of Excellence program based on SeVEDS strategies to increase the size and quality of the region’s workforce. P3 was launched as a five year pilot, thanks to historic investment from the Vermont Community Foundation and McClure Foundation, the Vermont Training Program, WCEDP Vermont Yankee closure funds, and municipal contributions to SeVEDS. In 2023 P3 reached a major program milestone by commitments from the private sector. M&T Bank, whose support was matched by local employers G.S. Precision and C&S Wholesale Grocers joins funding partners McClure Foundation, the George W. Mergens Foundation, the Windham Regional Career Center and the West River Education District in supporting P3 across southeastern Vermont.
